Let’s go Clubbing

A Gentle Reminder for a Safe Community

Our course is designed for recreation and for relaxation, but it is still a sporting field where high-speed projectiles are constantly in motion. Your awareness keeps your family protected and ensures golfers can play without fear of unintentionally injuring someone.

At both White River Country Club and White River Country Estate, we take pride in looking after one another. Together, with a little care and mindfulness, we can keep our beautiful environment safe for every resident, young and old.

What’s Happening at the Club?

The atmosphere at WRCC is buzzing as our Clubhouse upgrades continue to bring a fresh, exciting new look to the clubhouse we all love. The front veranda is progressing beautifully and is on track to be ready for the upcoming festive season. We’re hoping to have it in use from 16 December—fingers crossed that the weather plays along!

Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project is scheduled to begin in the new year and will include:

  • A revamped bar overlooking the right side of the veranda and the padel courts
  • Relocation of the Pro Shop into the Clubhouse (current garage area)
  • An upgraded main Clubhouse entrance

A huge thank you goes out to Bridget White and KMI (Grant Pontting) for their incredible efforts in transforming the Halfway House.   It looks fantastic! On behalf of the members and the Club, we truly appreciate the time, energy, and dedication you put in to make it happen.

On-Course Updates

There are a number of ongoing improvements on the course that you may start noticing:

  • Bunker Upgrade: Charl and his team are working through the course, replacing bunker sand with silica sand to give our bunkers the quality uplift they deserve.
  • Course Rerating: All holes will soon undergo rerating, with stroke changes implemented. All tees will play off the same stroke allocation, bringing WRCC in line with the World Handicap System.
  • 11th Hole Cart Path: Thanks to Alan Urmson and the Tuesday School for assisting with the relocation of the cart path, which now runs up the right side and around the back of the green.
  • 17th Hole Fountain: A new fountain has been installed in the 17th dam, generously donated by the Wednesday “Tortoise” group. Apart from being a beautiful feature, it will also oxygenate the water—beneficial for both fish and course irrigation.

The Golf Course

Walking the Course – Have We Forgotten the Best Part of the Game?

Over the past few months, a question has been coming up more and more… what happened to walking the course?
Somewhere along the way, most golfers moved to carts, and the simple joy of strolling down the fairway with your clubs became the exception instead of the norm. Golf has picked up a reputation for being time-consuming, and many believe that a cart = a faster round. But with ready golf now standard, a walking fourball keeps pace perfectly well – and often feels far more enjoyable.

So here’s a gentle reminder of why walking has always been such a special part of this game.

The Health Benefits Are Bigger Than You Think

A single 18-hole round can easily clock up 10,000 steps or more, and you burn almost double the calories compared to riding. It’s effortless exercise: fresh air, movement, sunlight, and a steady pace that keeps your body active without feeling like a workout.
Walking the course helps with weight control, heart health, blood pressure, stress levels, and general wellbeing. It’s the healthiest part of the round — and you barely notice you’re doing it.

Your Score Might Even Thank You

Believe it or not, many golfers perform better when they walk.
When you’re on foot, you naturally:

  • See the angles, slopes, and wind better
  • Stay in your rhythm
  • Keep your mind calmer between shots
  • Focus on your game instead of getting pulled into your cart partner’s routine

A relaxed mind often leads to better golf. The walk between shots does half the work for you.

More Conversation, Less Rushing

One of the hidden perks of walking is how social it is. You chat to everyone in the group, not just the person sharing your cart.
The round feels more connected — more like the traditional game we all grew up with. A stroll down the fairway gives the group time to talk, laugh, and enjoy the camaraderie that makes club golf so special.

What Twilight Golf Used to Be

Twilight golf originally started as a relaxed late-afternoon walk — a few holes, fresh air, and no rush. Carts weren’t allowed, not because of rules, but because the whole point was to unwind and enjoy the course.
Over time, carts found their way in and suddenly twilight became a race to squeeze in as many holes as possible before dark. The atmosphere shifted… and a little bit of the magic disappeared.

Maybe It’s Time to Bring Walking Back

Walking isn’t outdated. It isn’t slower. And it isn’t an inconvenience.
It’s healthier, calmer, more social, and honestly adds so much more enjoyment to the game we all love. Golf doesn’t have to be rushed.
Sometimes the best part of the round is the walk between the shots.
