Who’s That Cleaning Up Our Town?!

Dear Residents of White River Country Estates – and all our neighbours,

The Power of 8000

Many small South African towns have seen a rapid decline, plagued by high unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure and limited access to services.

Potholes, Parks, & The Power of the People

Let’s face it – navigating local government can often feel like an uphill battle.  For many of us, getting issues fixed or finding someone reliable at the municipality can seem daunting, if not impossible.  But what if we told you there’s a powerful solution growing right here in our own backyard?

In 2020, our charming town of White River faced significant challenges. Potholes marred the roads, illegal dumping became a common sight, and the beautiful parks and heritage sites we cherish turned into unsightly messes.

But when the going gets tough, the tough get going! A group of passionate residents and local business owners decided to take matters into their own hands. They started community-driven initiatives aimed at fixing and sprucing up our roads, parks, and public spaces. With the energy and spirit that defines White River, this grassroots movement began to flourish.

It all began with a few determined individuals, already engaged in the Feed the Need project providing meals during COVID, who were fed up with the municipal failures affecting our town. In 2021, they tackled the small park at the corner of Danie Joubert and Impala streets, opposite the Engen garage, and soon turned their attention to the notorious Ronnie Bester Park where ten truckloads of rubbish were cleared away, transforming it from a blight to a beacon.

As news of their efforts spread, residents took notice and rejoiced. Offers of volunteer assistance rolled in, as did donations of cash, tools, and equipment. Thus, the Power of 8000 was born – a vibrant community initiative that now includes alliances with other groups such as the White River Youth Forum, providing opportunities for local youth.

Let’s take a moment to shine a spotlight on an inspiring group of young heroes who are making waves in White River.

The Power of 8000

Under the passionate leadership of Tshepo Sedibe, this dynamic team took on a monumental challenge: the cleanup of the Nature Reserve, where vagrants had left behind hundreds of full garbage bags. The situation was daunting, with litter strewn about and the overgrown landscape in desperate need of attention.   Tshepo and his team worked tirelessly through the scorching mid-summer heat, dedicating countless hours to restoring the beauty of the reserve.

The results of their hard work were nothing short of astonishing!

Join Us in Building the Spirit of White River

Cleanliness is a continuous endeavour, and to maintain our progress, a comprehensive waste management strategy, including bins, skips, and a dedicated collection schedule, has been created.

Here’s where you come in!

Imagine the impact we could make if each estate around White River committed to joining hands in this mission.

By volunteering your time or donating resources, you can help us keep our precious town and the areas surrounding it vibrant and inviting. Whether it’s a few hours spent picking up litter, creatively beautifying parks, helping with co-ordination or a contribution to sponsorship efforts, every little bit helps.

As we work together, we’re not just cleaning our environment – we’re fostering a deep, abiding love for White River – a town rich in a history filled with unique, often eccentric, and always interesting characters.

We all dream of a future where local government listens and effectively responds to the community’s needs.  Towns all over the country are following the example set in 2020/1 by White River and other pioneer towns.

That future starts with us, as we advocate for change and create a shared vision for the gem of the Lowveld that we love.

The Power of 8000 is dedicated to building lasting partnerships with the Mbombela municipality, striving for improved resources and accountability. Together, we can amplify our voices and create a cleaner, greener White River for everyone to enjoy.
